Welcome to 2026! As business owners, we all start the year with fresh goals for growth and revenue. However, nothing derails momentum faster than an unexpected fine from the ATO.
Australia’s tax system is strict on deadlines. Missing a date doesn't just mean a slap on the wrist; it often triggers the General Interest Charge (GIC) and, in the case of Superannuation, can cost you thousands in lost tax deductions.
To help you stay safe, we have compiled the essential tax dates for 2026 below.
Before you get too comfortable in the new year, there are two critical dates you need to mark in your calendar right now.
⚠️ January 28, 2026: Superannuation Guarantee (SG) Due.
This covers the period of October 1 – December 31, 2025. If you miss this date, you must lodge a Super Guarantee Charge Statement, and the payment becomes non-tax deductible.
February 28, 2026: Quarter 2 BAS Due.
If you lodge your own BAS, this is the deadline for the October–December quarter. If we lodge for you, we can usually extend this.
Save this table. These are the standard dates for businesses reporting Quarterly BAS and Superannuation.
| Due Date | Obligation | Period Covered |
|---|---|---|
| Jan 28 | Superannuation (SG) | Oct - Dec 2025 |
| Feb 28 | Quarterly BAS & PAYG | Oct - Dec 2025 |
| Apr 28 | Superannuation (SG) | Jan - Mar 2026 |
| Apr 28 | Quarterly BAS & PAYG | Jan - Mar 2026 |
| May 15* | Annual Tax Return | 2024-2025 Financial Year |
| Jul 28 | Superannuation (SG) | Apr - Jun 2026 |
| Jul 28 | Quarterly BAS & PAYG | Apr - Jun 2026 |
| Oct 28 | Superannuation (SG) | Jul - Sep 2026 |
*May 15 is the extended deadline for clients of Registered Tax Agents. If you self-lodge, your tax return was likely due back in October 2025.
Tracking these dates manually in a spreadsheet is risky. Life happens, and it’s easy to forget a date until the ATO letter arrives in the mail.
If you are using cloud software like Xero or MYOB, ensure your dashboard alerts are turned on. They will often flag upcoming BAS due dates.
The ATO grants Registered Tax Agents (like PrepMyBook) special privileges. In most cases, we can secure you an extra 4 weeks to lodge and pay your BAS. This is invaluable for cash flow management.
