Calculating GST on calculator

GST mistakes are the most common reason tradies get audited. If your turnover is over $75,000, you must register for GST. Here is what you need to know about charging it.

1. Quotes MUST Include GST

If you quote a residential customer, the price must be inclusive of GST. You cannot quote "$100 + GST" to a homeowner; the final price ($110) must be prominent.

For B2B jobs (working for a builder), "plus GST" quotes are acceptable, but best practice is to always show the full amount.

2. Subcontractors vs Employees

If you hire a subcontractor, they must provide you with a Tax Invoice including GST (if they are registered). Do not pay them GST if they are not registered—check the ABN Lookup tool first.
