Payroll Rules for Plumbing Apprentices (Award MA000036)
Most plumbing businesses in Australia operate under the Plumbing and Fire Sprinklers Award (MA000036). It is notoriously complex, especially for apprentices.
1. Paying for TAFE Days
You must pay apprentices for the time they spend at trade school (RTO). It is considered working hours. You must also reimburse their training fees and textbook costs within 6 months of them starting.
2. Tool Allowance
If your apprentice provides their own tools, you must pay them a weekly Tool Allowance. If you provide all tools, this allowance is not payable, but you must ensure this is documented in their employment contract.
3. Travel Allowance
Daily travel allowances apply if the apprentice is required to start work at a job site rather than at your workshop. This changes annually, so check the Fair Work Pay Guide.
Avoid Fair Work fines.
We can set up Xero Payroll with the correct Award Rules (MA000036) so you never underpay your staff.
