Ready to launch your business in Victoria? Whether you're opening a lane-way cafe or a tech startup in Richmond, the first step is making your name official.

Registration is handled nationally by ASIC, but there are local Victorian considerations you need to know.

Step 1: Is the name available?

Use the ASIC Connect name availability search. You should also check domain names (websites) and social media handles at the same time. In 2026, securing the `.com.au` domain is just as important as the legal name registration.

Step 2: Apply for your ABN

Go to the Australian Business Register (ABR) website.
Tip: If you are unsure of your structure (Sole Trader vs Company), speak to an accountant first. Changing structure later is expensive and involves transferring assets.

Step 3: Register with ASIC

Once you have the ABN, register the business name via ASIC Connect. The fees are standardized nationally ($44 for 1 year, $103 for 3 years).

Step 4: Victoria Specifics (WorkSafe)

If you are employing staff in Victoria, you must register for WorkSafe Victoria insurance if your annual remuneration exceeds $7,500. This is a strict requirement in Vic.
